After experiencing Bloober Team’s outstanding work on the Silent Hill 2 remake, I’ve developed a solid trust in their ability to create captivating horror games. Their upcoming release, Cronos: The New Dawn, certainly has my attention. The game promises a thrilling experience, reminiscent of the gruesome atmosphere of Dead Space.
The co-directors of Cronos, Wojciech Piejko and Jacek Zięba, have openly shared their inspirations for this sci-fi survival horror adventure. Influenced by John Carpenter’s The Thing, the eerie German series Dark, and Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys, the game also nods to renowned titles like Dead Space and Dark Souls. Fans can expect familiar elements from Dead Space, such as horrifying mutated enemies, a tense over-the-shoulder perspective, and a unique limb-severing mechanic. It’s worth noting, though, that Piejko mentioned they are taking a fresh approach to dismemberment compared to what we saw from Visceral Games.
Following a cinematic reveal trailer that dropped last October, Piejko and Zięba recently released a new dev diary showcasing some gameplay footage. They delve into the storyline, explaining that the main character, referred to as the Traveller, operates like a deep-sea diver who ventures into the realm of time. The Traveller’s mission involves navigating the remnants of human civilization to rescue survivors. The game’s narrative unfolds in an alternate reality where a catastrophic event known as the Change devastated our world in the 1980s.
Having previously collaborated on Bloober Team’s Observer and The Medium, Piejko and Zięba bring substantial experience in sci-fi and psychological horror to Cronos: The New Dawn, a fresh and original concept for Bloober. Meanwhile, the team is also working on an exciting new project with Konami.
