MSI has just unveiled its latest lineup of Claw gaming handhelds, introducing the powerful Intel Core Ultra 7 258V processor, packed with 32GB of RAM, and storage options up to a 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD. Notably, MSI highlights how easily users can upgrade this storage. The two models, the MSI Claw 8 AI+ and Claw 7 AI+, are almost identical in terms of performance. The real differences stand in display size, battery life, and overall dimensions.
Whichever model you choose, you’re guaranteed robust performance, whether you’re all about the ultimate immersive experience with a larger screen or prefer the convenience of something more portable.
With identical specifications across the board, both models come equipped with a built-in Intel Arc 140 GPU. The Claw 8 AI+ boasts an 8-inch FHD+ touchscreen, while the Claw 7 AI+ offers a slightly smaller 7-inch display. Both screens support 120Hz refresh rates and deliver stunning visuals with 100% sRGB coverage and 500 nits of brightness. Audio performance is also top-notch, with dual 2W speakers that support DTS and Hi-Res Audio.
Connectivity is seamless thanks to the array of ports, including Thunderbolt 4 options and multi-purpose USB Type-C ports. The rigs also come with a fingerprint sensor and microSD slot, enhancing both security and expandability. Battery capacities differ, with the larger model housing an 80Whr 6-cell Li-Po, while the smaller one contains a 54.5Whr equivalent—both using a 65W USB Type-C PD adapter for charging.
Currently, MSI hasn’t revealed the pricing on its US platform. However, you can preorder through Amazon, with the Claw 8 AI+ ringing in at $899 for the 1TB version, whereas the Claw 7 AI+ is priced at $799, albeit with a smaller 512GB storage capacity. This discrepancy is not reflected in MSI’s official specifications.
One feature setting these handhelds apart is the integration of Intel processors, a choice that deviates from others in the market like the ROG Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go, which typically utilize AMD technology. Beyond the chips, MSI has reengineered the joysticks, bumpers, D-pads, and triggers to improve ergonomics and gameplay precision.
While Tencent has announced a similar device with the same Intel processor, it’s still under development and unlikely to hit U.S. markets soon.
The new Intel Lunar Lake chips featured in these handhelds promise enhanced efficiency, supporting longer gaming sessions by running at 17W. According to MSI, these devices offer “113% higher peak FPS and an average 20% higher FPS under identical power conditions.”
MSI aims to make the Claw AI+ devices multi-functional. With a wide range of ports, they could serve as mini-PCs and come equipped with Copilot+ capabilities. Additionally, MSI introduces an exclusive App Player, facilitating both Windows and Android game installations. All these aspects combined make these devices an intriguing proposition for both work and leisure.
